I just read this piece in the TOI on Air India firing some ten airhostesses for being overweight (I have read such posts in the past too). I have often wondered why we attach such importance to beauty and looks (especially of the womenfolk) in the service/hospitality industry! I believe this is subtle/latent discrimination of people.
Ok! I can understand some of it; I also seek beauty in personal life. Attraction/aspiration for beauty is natural and obvious but this should not mean that we employ only beautiful people for certain positions (air hostesses, receptionists, secretaries and the like). Alas! that is how it happens on earth!
While I am writing this, there are some seven comments on the story – all of them by males. Most (not all) of these males seem to agree and argue in favour of beauty (as if they themselves are Adonis or Hrithik!).
Edited 1 March 2009: Unpretentious diva argues in favour of the move.
