Indian Rail reservation site IRCTC sucks

Written by Vikas Gupta

The Indian Railways’ Train Reservation website IRCTC.co.in is the 22nd most trafficked site in India according to Alexa rankings and it is one of the worst websites in India! Here is my truncated list of woes and I am sure most (if not all) experience all/most of these problems. :(

IRCTC Railway ticket booking site

The site is slow, very slow, painfully slow! It irritates like anything. The server support is just not enough. You need to be lucky to finish your job with this site. You never know when it will hang or become inaccessible. My success rate with this site has been 7 out of 10 and my friends and neighbours also have a similar experiences with this website. If you are very unlucky you may be charged without a corresponding ticket booked for you (you get the money back later of course). I am ‘on a wing and a prayer’ whenever I have to use this website. What should be over is just 5-7 minutes often takes some 30 minutes or more on this website (and often in vain).

Try accessing it at about 8 am for Tatkal ticket booking. For some weird reason (feel free to call it conspiracy), it is rarely accessible from 8 am to 8:30 am every day! It is a very useful site just the same and one I can’t live without! I am thinking of sending this post by email to Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee and to senior officers in the said ministry (as if they don’t know, huh!).

  1. You’re right. It is painfully slow. But like you said, I can’t do without it. Come to think about it, almost all Indian sites have the same terrible design – maybe they’re hiring the same firm :D

    • Vikas Gupta says:

      Bhagwad,

You are so right! All govt sites suck! This site is hosted with MTNL and MTNL really really sucks! Designs are also by some govt. organization only (mostly NIC if I am not incorrect) or by some pvt. organisation. You know the UPSC website has not changed a bit in last 10 years!

  2. arpit says:

i guess you are keeping reader’s like me waiting for you to write some light post. with no offense , please fulfill our request. :P

    • Vikas Gupta says:

      Arpit,

I have no time to write something creative unfortunately. So I write some social posts to keep the blog going and the trend will continue. Will consider your suggestion. Thanks. I was under the impression you are no more into reading/writing blogs due to your studies.

      • arpit says:

oh no no! i am still alive and kicking in the blogging world :P
studies are integral and so is blogging . it was just that i had no inspiration to write something new. was just in the mode of rediscovering myself :)
but i have posted something new, not a full fledged article but a snap with a small line expressing my state of mind. i guess you have missed it out.
and no worries , even social posts will do the needful, i thought being a regular reader i should express my opinion. hope you are fine with it :)

  3. sunil balani says:

I agree . Initial part of selection of train etc is reasonable….. but when you key in your details and proceed to pay out part the probability of the transaction getting completed is not even 40%. sad part is one has to start all over again….why all government websites suffer from these problems ……lack of accountability I guess……

  4. Reema says:

ahh yes the site is very slow. all other downloads have to be stopped else payment fails. Also their customer care numbers are a fail..nobody ever picks up any of the numbers!

  5. sonu anand says:

true true true!!!!!!!!!!! always faced.. i try using book my trip it costs 10rs extra though :)

  6. Praveen says:

Really true it sucks a lot! I had been trying to book a ticket through tatkal, the login screen didn’t move ahead at all for a hour, SO i droped the plan of IRCTC and rushed to the railway station for booking the ticket after a hour struggling with this website, but my bad luck i didn’t even get through the ticket. If this website would have baan working properly I would have got a tatkal ticked.

And even the coustomer service people are not responding…

    • Vikas Gupta says:

Praveen, you can also use Clartrip and others to book tickets (as Praven says he does) though I have never used other services (and wonder how they can work in real time when the IRCTC site is down!).

  10. sowmya says:

The problem is the way the site has been set up. Information and booking are completely separate for some reason (probably in keeping with traditional information and reservation booths).

  11. Bhanu Pratap says:

    Hello,

Thanks for posting such a great information on India railways, but I think the main issue with IRCTC is the REFUND.
The refund policy is very bad, it may take more then 3-4 months even after many followups via emails and even send a written complaint to the GM of Indian Railways.. This is the only drawback, our Govt. should take some action and improve the refund policy so that customer do not face at least refund problem.

  12. makkolil says:

IRCTC site is slow betwenn 8:00AM to 9:00AM only. The reason is they are reducing the bandwidth during this time to disallow tatkal booking. This is to help some thirpaty agencies , I think so

  13. It Sucks….really sucks….I had 4 failed transactions and because of this my bank account was not functional for 4 days as all the money was blocked by IRCTC…sucks…sucks…sucks

  14. Asem ibohal says:

its really sucks.. why the fucking website is not still change.. its shame for the india not only for railay

    Fuck You,

  15. Kirit says:

Its would be nightmare for anyone to book a ticket in Tatkal.
Its pathetic. TCS guys u guys did a pathetic job.
U r gone. If u r goin to a client dont giv it as an example of
ur work otherwise u ll b kicked out of the cabin.

    –Kirit

  16. vivek says:

Why do they allow the public to book the ticket then, they can straightaway declare that only agents can book tatkal tickets….

  17. arul says:

it is the worst exp a govt could give to its citizens. How many foreign travelers would come to country. This is the max pleasure we can give to those travelers.

  18. livereal says:

even as indian railways is earning so much, they can’t spend few lakhs to add more servers to serve online ticket booking system used millions (perhaps billions) of people across india. they don’t have sufficient servers to ever increasing traffic.

if you’re going to book using irctc, your chancnes are 1/10 in tatkal scheme. that’s very frustrating!

  19. U.K. Shukla says:

Presently IRCTC is not having check on E Ticket booking and charging left to Agents totally.

  20. Prashant says:

Well frnds , hi myself Prashant frm Gujarat nice to meet u all , n hv read all ur comments , but one hv u ever think , that why is irctc site is note same when first it was lunched on website, coz nw a dayz all are corrupted they are favouring and supporting the agents, as far best of my knowledge, some percent of seats they give away to agents, irctc’s tie-up with agents ,its irctc site side income,”ISME MEIN RAJNEETI” PPL

Earlier what was happening, ppl were getting easily booked their tickets through the sites, and there was no asking to agents or no bother of going to agents to get booked tickets, due to that agents business were down, they started crying,as result we have to suffer, So as far slow working of server is concern,it gets slow when u need urgently tickets to get booked, now a days availibility of seats are
insufficient,so we go for tatkal bookings,nw there’z a fixed it will open in morning 8′ O clock b4 2 of journey, but they do something frm there end to the server at the time of booking that it gets slow :

  21. kamal says:

  23. jacs says:

    Dear friends,
I know some people, who book tatkal ticket as early as at 4.am thru some 3rd party agents and taking good commission.

Since its been reported to Vigilance, No more info can be given.

Hope I will succeed in stopping some activities!

    sincerely …

  24. Prashant says:

We dont hv Direct Train from Gandhidham to Bhubaneswar,a very long time back i had heared that soon there will be new train starting directly , but its very sad,we hv reached n we are living in 2010 today ,these corrupted Ministers they are supporting eachothers and there own states, not giving attention to other states, what is happening and how the other ordinary people are suffering in there day to day life “A little buttom getting pressed by people and big win that doesn’t make any sense there many people who are note literate they dont know difference bwtn the wrg n right, dey jus simple go n wat dey are been told dey do dat only, its abt poor, needy and ordinary people who hv to suffer for each n every little problems, but those who hv money, dey jus hv to show the money and there work is done ,”i dont thing d way the 2day india is going and people r living” it will neva develop d states, cities, vilages will stay d way it is ” we need to get together”and unite ourselves, and make our india and take india on no.1 position

  25. Name says:

Tata (as in TCS) is corrupting indian politicians. He has bribed Mamatha to bag IRCTC project. This is like any other road construction. Servers are eaten by bribes thats why it is such slow.

  26. IRCTC Hater says:

Whoever designed this f***ing piece of s**t must go to hell :(

  27. Prashant says:

ya……f***ing system & software of irctc’s till d problem is goin on ….in tatkal quotas nw even if u book the tickets u get W/L in tatkal quotas & n knw wat u hv to wait for your seat confirmation to….dont knw wat this people are doin, its just like showpiece dey hv put it on website ,dey hv just developed it to jus show people dat we have done something for public, to hv votes frm public….dese railway ministers….once dey got d ministry seats……dey forget dere responsiblities…n show to public dat dey are alwayz dere for public needs ….still the same problem continues….we hv to go to agents for ticket bookings for Tatkal quotas in “General no chance of gettin seats..”dont even thing in dreams” dat u’ll get seats, bt u’ll get alwaz full signal…no solution for dis damn s**t v had to pay agent commision for gettin it done…..dis is where v r ……its 2011…..

  28. raj says:

who are maintaining this fucking site .. ?

  29. raj says:

I mean irctc , damn site .. the worst site I ever seen .. !

we are paying for it .. but they … are fucking us ..

  30. akumar says:

This IRCTC site sucks big time. It is maddening especially considering that it has gone from bad to worse over time. It is not a rocket science to figure what could be the reasons – i)increased volumes but as usual the government machinery has not kept up pace with demand, ii) ganging up of agents and officials to increase their commissions, iii) mamta banerjee taking bribes from airline officials.
All three are viable and possible.
INDIAN RAILWAYS being a public sector monopoly behaves in a most atrocious manner towards the same tax payers on whose money they live. I hope their monopoly is broken in years to come. A good start has been made when metros have not been handed to IR lest they would have made a mess even there too.
    F*** you Indian Railways.

  31. A S RAO says:

IRCTC really sucks. It is difficult to book a tatkal ticket around )800 hrs. Once the tickets are over, the site is open.

    Here are some suggestions:

Distance restrictions on long distance trains to be reintroduced.
No refund, in case of cancelled tatkal ticket.
Identity proof of booking a tatkal ticket ( at least one of the passengers)should be made compulsory.
Token nos should be introduced at booking counters.
Tatkal counters should be separate ( atleast 0800 hrs t0 1000 hrs) and may be categorised as long distance( above 1500km) and others
Lastly, Tatkal tickets may be auctioned as in the case of airlines.

  32. prad says:

  38. DesiDon says:

Yep Indian Railway sucks, their web site sucks. . & Whats more they have actually suspended Internet Reservation now!. Talk about going backwards!! So, i tried to Book via Makemytrip.com that is another storey.. .Add to the list of Sucky Websites operated out of India! I dont get it i understand india lacks infrastructure but we have Millions of Engineers and they still cannot even load balance a Website properly so its hosted all the time without Fucking Downtime!!

I am so frustrated right now, i tried to Book train tickets 3 x on Makemytrip.com after i input all the Data, it says this should take about 1 – 2 minutes, then it says “Its taking longer than usual” then gives me an Unexpected ERROR – - WTF!!!, i mean should these morons post on their site stating that the Reservations may not go thru since the Indian railways has suspended Online reservation. So, after wasting like 1 hour on makemytrip.com or should it it be makemybphigh.com fucking morons, billions of brancales,!! blue blistering baracles,! Syphlittic Pimps!!

  39. Shone says:

The Indian railway online booking (irctc.co.in) really sucks….Shame on Indian railways being a biggest employer sucks the common people who use the online reservation. Shame on u indian railway, being an indian citizen with lots of pain I curse this site and who maintains this…No use got to hell indian railways…….

  40. Ganapathy says:

    Very painful :-(

  41. Bigdaddy says:

    Couldn’t book ticket from last 2hrs. I just want to say FUCK U Indian Railways..FUCK U MAMATHA BANERJEE…FUCK U..

  42. Jose says:

Its is the worst site I ever experienced. And it is deliberately keep in this mode by the authorities to please some other interests. If CBSE can host 5 lac – 10 lac at a time when the Results published, it still works like a bullet train. Its also a Government run site. The pathetic experience, provided by the Govt. for its valued citizens, in simple words……. its horrible. You are extremely lucky if u can book a ticket in the 8-9 am slot. Quick Book facility withdrawn from 8-9 am to help other interests. They want us to go to the Que (Take leave from office) in the wee hours and try your luck. This is Mamta’s (sorry……… Trinamool’s) Railway. And its going back to the 1990′s era in case of speed. But we can’t avoid this site. That’s the truth.

  43. VINAY says:

Now some other private / commercial sites are offering booking railway tickets, so may be some looters making irctc site slow and helping private website for money
