I have come across two major instances where Indian newspapers have made an error in reporting the number of Twitter followers for popular Indians. I am also planning to publish a post on instances of plagiarism by the Indian media/newspapers that I keep running into while surfing the internet/blogs.
Mail Today says Priyanka first Indian with 1 Lakh Twitter followers!
In today’s (23 December 2009) Mail Today tabloid (New Delhi), the front page has a boxed teaser about ‘Bollywood queen’ Priyanka Chopra making waves on Twitter. It says: MILESTONE: “Priyanka first Indian with 1 lakh Twitter followers.”
That is certainly NOT true. Shashi Tharoor on Twitter, has 525,290 followers while I am writing this post. In the actual report on page 3 however, Prashant SIngh has written that Priyanka is ‘Bollywood’s first celebrity to have over one lakh followers’. This is not the first time Shashi Tharoor has been so badly ignored by the Mail Today tabloid. I recall reading a tweet some months ago(couldn’t find the link)by Shashi Tharoor in which he had called in question a published report on him (the five-star hostel as residence issue) in the tabloid.
Hindustan Times had reported that Shashi Tharoor had 5000 followers in September 2009!
Remember the Shashi Tharoor and the Cattle Class controversy?! Hindustan Times in a report on the matter by Aurangjeb Naqshbandi had reported on 16 September 2009 that Shashi Tharoor had 5000 Twitter followers while the number of the then followers was more than 160,000! See a snapshot of the mistake below and the article is still there on the website of Hindustan Times with the said error!
