What is Web Hosting: A Creative Definition

Written by vik

Topics: How-to

First the regular boring definition: “A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that  Web Hostingallows individuals and organizations to make their own website accessible via the World Wide Web.” If you are looking for the regular explanation you can read read the Web Hosting entry on Wikipedia. But if you are looking for a different, interesting and creative definition of Web Hosting, then read on this post written for a contest to creatively define Web hosting.

The creative explanation: Your Home on the World Wide Web

home sweet home A Web Hosting or website hosting service is provided by a company that offers to host your website(s). A web host agrees to host your website(s) or blog(s). Your domain name (such as vikas-gupta.in) is your web address and you need the hosting space and servers to install and run your virtual home from that address. You can start that home on the servers of your hosting company. Simply put, it is called Web Hosting. 🙂

You do not start a construction company (unless you are extremely entrepreneurial with tons of home money) but buy a home from a construction company or builder. In the same vein, you buy the hosting services of a web hosting company. You have different and many builders in every country and similarly you have thousands of small and big web hosting companies willing to host your website(s) such as Exabytes, Hostgator, Bluehost and the like.

Indeed, buying Web Hosting is like buying your Home

A very nice analogy obtains between a home and web hosting. In the following table, I have creatively summed up how web hosting is akin to buying a home to drive my message home. 🙂

Specs or Generic Features

Home

Web Hosting

1. Space and Leeway You look for space in terms of square feet and acres. You want a 2 bedroom or 4 bedroom home or a penthouse according to your budget. You want shared hosting or Reseller account or a Virtual Private Server (VPS) depending on your space and bandwidth needs.
2. Reliability You want an accredited builder or construction company to buy a house from. You want a Web Host that has been in business for long and one that is trusted and positively reviewed by customers.
3. Add-on Benefits You want to ensure that your would-be home has a nice parking lot, swimming pool, health and fitness centres, entertainment amenities, clubs, sports complex, security, easy access to market place etc. You want your web host to be flexible in terms of offering space, bandwidth, no. of email accounts, add-on domains, script installs, parked domains, FTP access, MySQL accounts,  server guarantees, cpanel etc.
4. Permanency Your home is always there for you, come what may. It’s door will always remain open for you. Similarly a nice web hosting service will give you about 99.9 per cent uptime! Your websites will never be homeless!
5. Security You want your home to be secure of thefts, earthquake, power cuts (with power back up) so that it offers the peace of mind for your family. You want your web host to offer features like website back up, hacking-proof fast servers, great customer support and world class technology.
6. Identity Your Home on the planet earth is your place of living. The world knows that you and your family lives there and they visit you in your home or write you snail mails. The World visits your web addresses (URLs) which have a virtual home on your web host’s servers. It shelters your online identity, emails and online communications that you can easily manage.
7. Peace of Mind Home is where the heart is. Your home, your family, your kids gives you the peace of mind that you miss elsewhere. You feel miserable without a home of your own. A nice Web Host is a great asset to your online life and online business. It takes away all your tension of hosting your sites on the web. You are homeless on the web without the web hosting.
8. Maintenance Your home needs repair, fresh paint and plaster once in a while to avoid the effect of wear and tear in course of normal use. Your web hosting servers need maintenance to remain robust just like your home.

So you see, understanding Web Hosting is simple! It is your online virtual home on the World Wide Web. 🙂

Very informative. I’m considering hosting my blog, but right now I’m just going with the flow. I certainly like the freedom of hosting, but I don’t really know if it’s worth it in my case specifically. Still, lots a benefits to being hosted, and I hope you get you Sony VAIO! ^_^
